Malawi is a perfect country for self driving. Driving is on the left hand side of the road and your country of residence drivers licence can be used as long as it is valid for the class vehicle hired.Land and Lake has a choice of vehicles available for hire.
We can advise you on the best vehicle to use in relation to your route and we provide necessary backup for you whilst in the country as part of our commitment to service excellence
Vehicles available are
Saloon - Toyota Corolla or Similar - US $ 120.00 per day
4 X 4 Twin Cab - US $ 185.00 per day
4 X 4 Station Wagon - US $ 220.00 per day
4x4 Fully Kitted Station Wagon - US $ 250.00 per day
All vehicles have air conditioning & power steering and comes fully kitted with the following equipment – [A full list is available on request]
- Rooftop tent and bedding for 2 people,
- Full catering equipment inclusive gas cooker & gas light,
- Car fridge / cooler,
- Water jerry can,
Spare wheel and vehicle recovery equipment.
Includes: Unlimited km per day + taxes & Malawi fully comprehensive insurance [Full cover]
Excludes: Fuel, relocation charges if vehicle is dropped / pick up outside Lilongwe.

Cross border fully comprehensive Insurance – US $ 365.00 – Paid in LLW prior to departure
Cross border fees - temporary exportation permit – US $ 10.00 – Paid at point of exit
2nd countries carbon tax & third party insurance - US $ 45.00 [approx] - Paid at point of entry
4X4 Full kitted – Excess US $ 5000 to cover total loss of all supplied equipment. Excess procedures - an imprint of your credit card will be taken as a deposit. The slip will be returned to the hirer on completion of the hire, should all equipment be in accounted for and in good order.
Remember – On all self drive hires we are able to advise you on a route and make relevant reservations if required.
All Vehicles are able to enter Zambia at no extra cost except for the relevant tolls and local 3rd party insurance, which you settle direct.
Malawi is a great country to visit - it has a simple but good road network with a small degree of moderately challenging off road driving - to access even some of the most remote parks in the country. Everyone is friendly, extremely helpful and they generally all speak English – so self driving, even for the novice, is an enjoyable experience.
