Since 1986
Land & Lake Safaris was established as Malawi's first Tour Operator.
Mark & Angela Sprong operated personal safaris across, then, a very remote Malawi and Zambia.
In the last 40 years, Land & Lake Safaris has curated tours and excursions for thousands of people across the world into Malawi & Southern Africa. From romantic hot air balloon safaris across Kafue National Park to diving the depths of Lake Malawi, our still small team on the ground offer a personalised service to ensure you get the best that the region has to offer.
OUR HISTORY
Land & Lake Safaris was founded in the late 80's when Mark and Angela Sprong packed up their young family and made the bold move to Malawi. In those early days, the roads were rough, communications slow and every safari was an adventure into the unknown. From convoys through war-torn Mozambique to fixing cars by the roadside with guests in tow, the Sprongs laid the foundations of a company built on resilience, passion and a deep love for Malawi and its wilderness. Alongside running safaris, they became pioneers in conservation too, helping to establish the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre and supporting community and environmental projects across the country.
Nearly four decades later, Land & Lake Safaris has grown into one of Malawi’s most trusted operators, welcoming hundreds of guests each year. The company now runs 15 scheduled tours annually in addition to tailor-made itineraries and private group travel. With a dedicated team of 30 staff, a reliable fleet of safari vehicles and an ethos rooted in both hospitality and conservation, Land & Lake Safaris continues to connect travellers to the beauty of Malawi, Zambia and beyond.
THE TEAM
Land & Lake Safaris is made up of a small and dynamic workforce of 30 employees across several departments. From expert guides with years of experience to mechanics, our reservations, accounts, ground staff, lodge staff and cafe crew.
A NOTE FROM THE NEXT GENERATION
For 40 Years, Land and Lake Safaris has been a family story.
In 1986, my parents, Mark & Angela Sprong, founded what would become one of Malawi's longest-standing safari companies. Their vision was simple: to share the places they loved with genuine passion, honest advice, and a deep respect for the people, wildlife, and landscapes of this remarkable region.
As Managing Director, I am incredibly proud to continue the journey they started. While the company has grown and evolved, the values remain unchanged. We are still family-owner, still fiercely passionate about Central Africa, and still committed to creating meaningful, authentic travel experiences that go beyond the ordinary safari.
Alongside me is Ollie, a long standing friendship built from the wilderness of South Africa and Botswana where we both qualified as guides in the same year group - Along with his wife Tan. Those years laid the foundation for the way we approach travel today - Adventure, learning, laughter and successful end results.
Together we represent - Alongside our incredible team - The next generation of land and Lake Safaris. Whilst still being deeply connected to the traditions, history and relationships that defined our company - We bring fresh ideas, and new plans forward.
