Land & Lake Safaris recently had the chance to host an amazing cycling tour for Urban Promise, an organisation that’s all about empowering youth and communities. This group of passionate cyclists set out to visit schools in Malawi supported by Urban Promise, and the trip was extra special with Bruce Main, the founder of Urban Promise, joining the ride. Covering around 40km a day, the adventure kicked off in Lilongwe and wound its way down to Lake Malawi, up onto the Zomba Plateau via Liwonde National Park, and finished in the lively southern city of Blantyre. Along the way, everyone got to soak up the very best of Malawi’s scenery, culture, and warm hospitality.

Lilongwe: The Journey Begins
The adventure started in Malawi’s bustling capital, Lilongwe. There was a real buzz as the group set off, ready to see what the country had in store. With a support vehicle leading the way and another following behind, everyone felt safe and looked after right from the start.
Salima: Riding with the Locals
The first leg took the group east to Salima, a lively town close to Lake Malawi. Here, the cyclists joined local riders, weaving through busy streets and past colourful fish and craft markets. The energy in Salima was infectious, and riding alongside the locals made this part of the journey feel like a real celebration.
Cape Maclear: Lakeside Vibes
From Salima, the route hugged the lakeshore down to Cape Maclear. The views were incredible — crystal-clear water, rolling hills, golden beaches, and fishing villages dotted along the way. Evenings brought beautiful sunsets and a chance to relax by the lake after a day on the bikes.
Liwonde National Park: Into the Wild
Next up was Liwonde National Park, one of Malawi’s top wildlife spots. The Big 5 sightings provided a memorable highlight for all.
Zomba Plateau: Up in the Clouds
The climb up to the Zomba Plateau was a challenge, but the cool mountain air and sweeping views made it all worthwhile. Winding roads, unique plants and dramatic scenery kept everyone inspired as they made their way to the top.
Blantyre: Rolling into the Finish
The final stretch brought the group into Blantyre, Malawi’s second-biggest city. Rolling into town felt like a huge achievement, and there was plenty of time to reflect on all the incredible experiences and new friendships made along the way.
Support and Good Food All the Way
Land & Lake Safaris made sure everything ran smoothly from start to finish. The Land & Lake Café in Lilongwe kept everyone fuelled with tasty meals and the backup vehicles were always close by with spare bikes, parts, first aid and plenty of snacks. The guides were full of local knowledge, sharing stories about Malawi’s landscapes, wildlife, and culture and making sure everyone had a great time.

Memories Made
Hosting Urban Promise and Bruce Main was a real honour. This tour was more than just a cycling trip - it was a celebration of Malawi’s beauty, the warmth of its people, and the joy of sharing an adventure together.
